Quick answer

Wear gloves for wet work, moisturise, never pick lifting edges and book infills every 2 to 3 weeks. See a doctor for pain, swelling or colour change.

Daily habits

  • Wear gloves for dishes, laundry and cleaning products.
  • Moisturise hands and cuticles, especially after acetone.
  • Use your finger pads, not your nails, as tools.
  • Keep the underside clean and dry.

Do not pick or bite

Lifting edges are a sign to book a refill, not to pull. Pulling takes natural nail with it.

Plan breaks

Dermatologists suggest not wearing artificial nails continuously. Time off lets nails repair.

Signs of a problem

The FDA notes that some people become sensitive to methacrylates and can develop redness, swelling and pain around the nail. The AAD advises seeing a dermatologist if nails change, swell or hurt. Do not cover a problem with a new set.

Who should skip acrylics

The AAD does not recommend artificial nails for people prone to fungal infections or with brittle nails.

Next: safe removal and choosing a technician.
