Acrylic Nail Removal

Most damage blamed on acrylics happens at removal. Here is how it should be done.

Quick answer

Acrylics should be filed down and soaked off in acetone by a professional, never pried off. Nairobi menus we checked list removal at KSh 500.

How professional removal works

  1. The length is clipped back.
  2. The top layer is filed down carefully.
  3. Fingertips soak in acetone until the acrylic softens.
  4. The softened product is gently pushed off, then the nail is buffed and moisturised.

The AAD suggests soaking only the fingertips in acetone, or using acetone soaked cotton wrapped in foil, to protect the skin around the nail.

Do not pick or pry

Cleveland Clinic advises having a professional remove acrylics rather than doing it yourself. Peeling a set off can take layers of the natural nail with it.

After removal

  • Keep nails short while they grow out.
  • Moisturise nails and cuticles several times a day.
  • Give your nails a break before your next set.
